40 years ago: Boys’ State participants arrive on KU campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 31, 1971:

  • Young men were arriving at Kansas University to take part in Kansas Boys’ State. The mock-government sessions were to be going on all week at the KU site. Many local residents were expected to continue their tradition of attending the retreat ceremony which occurred nightly at 7:15 p.m. in front of Lewis Hall near 15th and Iowa. As “masculine” haircuts were one of the requirements for admission this year, some new arrivals had been treated to a little trim to meet the new standards of no hair over the eyes, ears or collar.
  • The Lawrence Municipal Pool officially kicked off the swimming season with its Memorial Day weekend opening. Swimmers were pictured enjoying the water during Saturday’s balmy weather.
