Douglas County law enforcement officers and prosecutors are gearing up for next week’s run from Lawrence to Ottawa as part of the 30th annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Kansas Special Olympics.

The Lawrence to Ottawa 20-mile leg will begin after 8 a.m. Tuesday at Crown Toyota Scion, 3430 Iowa St., and runners will head south on U.S. Highway 59 carrying the Special Olympics torch — eventually handing it off to Franklin County officers and prosecutors in Ottawa.

The leg will be split among 35 runners representing the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Lawrence Police Department, Douglas County District Attorney’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol. The Torch of Hope will arrive June 3 in Wichita after being carried across the state for the start of the Special Olympics.

Special Olympians and law enforcement officers will carry the torch for the first mile of the run from Lawrence, said Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman. Last year local participants in the Torch Run raised more than $3,500 for the Special Olympics.

It is the 30th anniversary of the Kansas Law Enforcement Torch Run, and this year is the 41st annual Special Olympics summer games. More information is available at www.ksso.org.
