Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback suspends rules for trucks helping with Joplin tornado relief efforts

? Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has suspended some state regulations for trucks involved in disaster relief efforts for Joplin, Mo.

Brownback issued an executive order Wednesday. It will remain in effect through June 22.

The Kansas governor’s action expands the hours that truckers can work at night, on holidays and when there’s low visibility if they’re helping to haul away debris or bring supplies.

His executive order also waives fees for permits that are required for trucks to carry loads that exceed state weight limits.

Sunday’s tornado in Joplin killed more than 120 people and destroyed or damaged thousands of homes and businesses.

Brownback said the deadly storms across the Midwest show that people need to heed weather warnings and have an emergency plan in place.
