Club news for May 21, 2011

University Bridge Club announces results of its May 14 meeting with hosts Richard Quinn and Jo Anne Kready.

Blue winners: Dottie Miller, first; John Stark, second; Al Smith, third; Rob Smith, fourth; and Florence McNicoll, fifth.

Pink winners: Sadie Deaton, first; Willi Stark, second; Donna Gatts, third; Jo Anne Hicks, fourth; and Willie Stoltenberg, fifth.

Over the Rainbow Doll Club met May 12 at the home of Mikhaila and Mikhenna Brown in Olathe. Gail Brewster presented a lesson on Dolls of Faith. The books the dolls were based on were originally written by Elsie Dinsmore in the 1880s. The dolls were produced for a short time and have now gone out of production. Members gave reports about their visit to the Princess Diana exhibit at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., and the second annual Kansas City Doll and Teddy Bear Show at the Doubletree Hotel in Overland Park. The club’s doll birthday party planning committee gave a report and assigned projects to be completed. Plans for the Sewing Project Day were discussed and will be finalized during the June meeting. Mikhenna Brown won a door prize.

The Lawrence NAACP branch announces its 2011 scholarships award recipients. President Ursula Minor presented the $500 Hope Award to Chelsea Rios May 9 at Free State High School and the $500 Eagle Award to Tiana Daniels May 10 at Lawrence High School.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on May 11 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Vince Nordberg and Steven Vossler, first in A; Janice Hollowell and Mary Fenlon, second in A; Chris Lane and Jean Khatib, third in A and first in B; Yvonne Hedges and Sally Taylor, fourth in A and second in B; Jan O’Connor and Bobby Patton, third in A and first in C; and Marilyn Martin and Clarice Broz, second in C.

East-West winners were John Oxley and Klee Zaricky, first in A; Jerry Sloan and Adelaide Nyquist, second in A; Carol Ball and Mona Bell, third in A, and first in B and C; and Catherine Blumenfeld and Grant Sutton, fourth in A and second in B.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on May 13 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Chris Lane and Carol Ball, first in A and B; Craig Huneke and Jeremy Martin, second in A and B; and Julia Dalton and Lester Dalton, third in A.

East-West winners were Sally Taylor and Klee Zaricky, first in A and B; Lois Clark and Mona Bell, second in A and B; and Jack Flickinger and Dick Shaffer, third in A.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on May 16 utilized the Howell movement and was directed by Virginia Seaver. Winners were Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, first in A; Craig Huneke and Jeremy Martin, second in A, and first in B and C; Janice Hollowell and Mary Fenlon, third in A; Chris Lane and Ed Howard, fourth in A; James Masilamani and Donna Johnson, fifth in A; and Peter Petillo and Brian Barrett, second in B.
