Lawrence man arrested after threatening others with shovel

A 39-year-old Lawrence man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after threatening others with a shovel.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said police responded to the call in the 2000 block of West 27th Terrace about 1:15 p.m. A man was at a residence in the area intending to pick up his 15-year-old daughter, who does not live with him.

Hadl said the man became angry and the family, who the daughter is living with, essentially hid her from him. The man tried to open the door to enter the residence and was pushed out by two men, a 21-year-old and a 25-year-old. The suspect then grabbed a shovel and threatened the two men. They in turn confronted the suspect with a handgun and told him to leave, which he did.

Police took the suspect into custody and he was booked into the Douglas County Jail on charges of aggravated assault about 2:15 p.m. Hadl said police were investigating the firearm issue for appropriate use but no additional arrests had been made.
