Tune In: Charity concert raises funds, awareness for storm victims

A season of tribulation inspires a benefit concert. Torrential rains, floods and tornadoes have afflicted many parts of the American heartland, most notably Alabama, where a tornado killed hundreds when it touched down in Tuscaloosa, the state’s fifth-largest city and the home of the University of Alabama.

“Music Builds: CMT Disaster Relief Concert” (8 p.m., CMT) unites country stars for a live event to benefit American Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts. Scheduled performers include Hank Williams, Jr., Alabama, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Ronnie Dunn, Sarah Evans and Tim McGraw.

In addition to raising funds, the concert organizers hope to use tonight’s event to keep attention focused on the devastation and need for sustained aid, as the media can have a habit of doing a better job of covering the immediacy of a disaster than the long, hard job of rebuilding.

• Paintball wars conclude on “Community” (7 p.m., NBC). And so does the season for this less-than-water-cooler-generating NBC comedy. While “Community” has been renewed for another season, the fate of “Outsourced,” also ending its season tonight, is still up in the air.

In other season-finale news, Langston confronts killer Nate Haskell on the final episode of the 11th season of “CSI” (8 p.m., CBS). “Vampire Diaries” and “Nikita” also wrap up their seasons on the CW tonight.

“30 Rock” slipped into summer hiatus last week without much fanfare. More notable and negative news was generated by “The Office.” That comedy lost a considerable portion of its audience in the first week after the departure of Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell.

• The treacherous waters off Newfoundland and Maine are the setting for a third season of “Swords: Life on the Line” (9 p.m., Discovery), documenting a fishing boat in the North Atlantic rich in swordfish but notorious for violent storms, most notably the catastrophe of 1991 that claim six lives on the ship the Andrea Gail, made famous by the book, and subsequent film, “The Perfect Storm.”

Tonight’s other highlights

• A singer goes home on “American Idol” (7 p.m., Fox). In addition, Steven Tyler sells a video and Jordin Sparks performs.

• Before he was “The Fighter” he was the “Rock Star” (7 p.m., VH1 Classic). Mark Wahlberg stars in this 2001 drama as a tribute band singer hired by a real heavy mental band to replace a departing front man. Jennifer Aniston co-stars.

• Dwight takes over as interim manager on “The Office” (8 p.m., NBC).

• On two episodes of “Parks and Recreation” (NBC), two fight for one job (8:30 p.m.), road tripping (9 p.m.).

• After a violinist’s murder an orchestra fills with suspects on “The Mentalist” (9 p.m., CBS).

A color-coded heist job dissolves into chaos and violence in director Quentin Tarantino’s break-through 1992 drama “Reservoir Dogs” (7 p.m., IFC).
