From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 3, 1971:

• Attendance and sales records had been “shattered” at the 10th annual Lawrence Art in the Park festival. Officials estimated the day’s turnout as “well over 9,000,” with visitors turning up as early as 9 a.m. and staying after 6 p.m. for a festival scheduled to run only from 1 to 5 p.m. Temperatures were a bit chilly as Lawrence began the day in the 40s, and a breeze kept the afternoon cool. Late figures showed 103 sales of works of art for a total of $4,664. The highest price paid for a work was $400 for Celia Smith’s painting “Santiago.”
• About 45 local Cub Scouts from Pack 3059 had collected 9,010 pounds of paper during their recent paper drive. After being reimbursed $27.06 by the Lawrence Paper Company, the scouts paid for eight large elm and green ash shade trees to stand on the grounds of Schwegler School.
