25 years ago: Neighborhoods concerned about commercialization of Ninth Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Mar. 23, 1986:

  • In Lawrence, concerns about Ninth Street, “an east-west road that slices Lawrence’s central core in half,” were being discussed. City officials were pondering various road improvements, including a widening project. Members of the Oread Neighborhood Assn. and the Old West Lawrence Neighborhood Assn. were expressing concern about overcommercialization along the street. Plans for a convenience-store complex at Ninth and Indiana were adding to the controversy. Residents cited additional traffic problems, lack of green space, and demolition of old houses among their concerns.
  • A backup clock was going to be used when Kansas played North Carolina State in the NCAA Midwest Regional final today. With 2 1/2 minutes remaining in regulation, a clock malfunction in the KU-Michigan State game had possibly added as much as ten seconds to the game. Kansas had defeated Michigan State 96-86 in overtime.
