Nonprofit organization seeks land for affordable senior housing in Lawrence

Tenants to Homeowners hopes to convert empty land at 25th and Cedarwood streets to affordable housing for seniors. The nonprofit organization will start the process by bringing the request for the land to the Douglas County Commission meeting this evening.

The county-owned land, which is behind the United Way building, has been empty for years. Rebecca Buford, executive director for Tenants to Homeowners, said building moderately priced housing in the area would help bring more money to Lawrence and help the growing population of retirees.

“It’s a demographic we’re going to need to serve quite a bit in the next 50 years,” Buford said.

Today’s meeting is only the beginning, as Buford is putting in a request to consider the proposal for land.

The meeting is at 6:35 p.m. today in the Douglas County Courthouse on the second floor.
