40 years ago: Chemical sprays used in attempt to control corn blight

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 28, 1971:

  • The spread of Southern Corn Leaf Blight had led the Douglas County Extension Service to spray one of the area fields affected by the infestation. The fungus, which had been confirmed in nine Kansas counties besides Douglas County, was seriously affecting 10 fields locally, with 30 to 50 other Douglas County fields showing some sign of the disease. Efforts were aimed at controlling the blight, which had wiped out much of the previous year’s corn crop in the Mississippi and Ohio River Valley regions.
  • Retail sales of fireworks had begun on the previous day just outside the city limits. Police Chief Richard Stanwix reminded local residents that fireworks could be detonated within the city limits from July 1 to 5 only.
  • The agenda for the upcoming City Commission meeting included consideration of an ordinance designating Old County Road 689 and 689A as East 22nd Street Terrace.
  • A paid advertisement announced: “Effective July 1, The Eldridge House Dining Room will be A Class “A” Private Club for Monday – Friday Noon Luncheons. All patrons must be members or guests of members. Membership — $1.00 per year. Open to the public for Sunday Dinner Noon – 2:30 p.m.”
