Immediate needs

• The Corps of Engineers at Perry Lake welcomes volunteers of any age throughout the year (especially in the summer months) who want to help with ongoing maintenance, clerical assistance and park ranger duties. Examples of volunteer activities include trash pickup, trail maintenance, cleaning fire rings, building picnic tables and placing signs. Individuals and groups of any size are welcome. Volunteers younger than 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign a waiver before volunteering. The office is on the south side of Perry Lake or about 20-30 minutes north of Lawrence depending on where you are coming from. The address is 10419 Perry Park Drive. Contact Bunnie Watkins at 785-597-5144 or bunnie.a.watkins@usace.army.mil if you would like to volunteer outdoors.

• Lawrence Humane Society is in need of volunteers for two upcoming events July 9. Three volunteers are needed to help with an adoption event at the Tractor Supply Co. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Another two to three volunteers are needed to help with the Petco Dog Wash event from noon to 3 p.m. For more details about either event, contact Kayse Aschenbrenner at 843-6835 or kayse@lawrencehumane.org.

• GaDuGi SafeCenter is looking for community members who would like to become volunteer advocates. GaDuGi advocates play an important role in providing 24/7 support to those affected by sexual violence in the community. A new volunteer training session will begin in September, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. If you’re interested in committing to an ongoing volunteer opportunity and learning how you can effectively advocate for survivors of sexual violence, contact Pam Lawrence at 843-8985, ext. 320, or directservices@sunflower.com for more details.
