Topeka ? One person was killed and another critically injured in a fire at an apartment in southwest Topeka.

The fire was reported late Thursday at the Brookwood Apartments.

Topeka Fire Battalion Chief Martin Gray says a man and a woman were taken to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. One person died and the other was taken to a Kansas City area hospital in critical condition.

Their identities haven’t been released.

WIBW reports that several animals also died in the fire.

Gray said one apartment was extensively damaged and adjacent apartments had smoke damage.
