Mass St. Chic: Swap up your style routine for summer

The dog days of summer are only just beginning. After a while, everyone gets sick of their favorite sundress, perfectly worn cut-offs and signature lipstick hue. So liven it up! Keep your summer style fresh, and keep your favorite makeup, accessories and wardrobe pieces in constant rotation.

Accessory exchange:

Many women get used to wearing particular pieces, such as colorful scarves, as their main, statement accessory. If you have a favorite accessory that doesn’t seem compatible with your summer wardrobe or the summer sun, don’t immediately shove it to the back of your closet until the leaves start to fall. Instead, think about alternate ways it can still be worn. Loop a thin, silk scarf around your wrist, fasten it as a headband, or wrap it around the brim of a sun hat. If you just can’t seem to get your accessories to mesh, don’t sweat it! Sometimes it is best to be no-fuss — embrace the season, and par down your normal amount of daily accessories. Especially in the summertime, less is more. Focus attention on a different item, like a colorful, oversized canvas bag or intricate straw purse.

Beauty Swap:

After years and years spent perfecting a solid daily beauty routine, I can understand why many women don’t want to branch out and try new makeup products, different lipstick hues and trendy eyeliner techniques. That is a huge time investment! But despite all this, I insist — subtle alterations to your normal makeup are noticeable and fun. If you don’t wear lipstick — give it a go. Many of summer’s hottest lipstick shades, like coral and fuchsia, are versatile colors that look great on a wide variety of skin tones. If you are currently a lipstick fanatic, take it down a notch. Try highlighting your eyes or cheeks in a punchy color instead, or stick to a more classic lip color, like red.

Color Convert:

Play around with the clothing already in your closet. Try creating new, in-style looks with separates. For example, challenge yourself to create an outfit with more than one pattern. Use clothing with similar base colors for an easy start. For another fun summer look, piece together a colorblock-ed outfit with your favorite, monochrome separates. Or, if you love particular summer trends, such as the nautical trend, shop for similarly inspired items. Black-and-white stripes are a fresh alternative to navy-and-white. You are still able to wear a pattern that you love, and the color change will open up your closet options.

More ideas:

• Trade your normal black or brown sunglasses for bright-rimmed shades. Colors like aqua blue, red, and bright white are great for summer.

• Take inspiration from popular swimsuit patterns. Incorporate polka dots and tropical motifs into your outfits.

• Spruce up a basic dress with accessories that won’t weigh you down. Beaded gladiator sandals and straw fedora hats are great accessories that add easy pizzazz without making you hotter.
