40 years ago: Local farmer brings in first load of wheat

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 20, 1971:

  • Public opinion was still divided about the “celebrated” drug raid carried out by Kansas Atty. Gen. Vern Miller in the early morning hours of Feb. 26. Of the 33 young people arrested during the raids, which had involved Miller and 150 officers, only eight cases had been completed, and no cases had been tried to their conclusion by a jury. Fifteen cases were scheduled to come to trial in the fall beginning in September.
  • The first truckload of wheat had been brought in to the Farmers’ Co-Op Grain Elevator by Delbert Green. The first field was likely to yield about 45 bushels to the acre. Other crops were reported to be “coming along in fine style and, barring drought or insects,” were expected to bring at least average or better yields.
