40 years ago: Groundbreaking for new CO2 plant in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 19, 1971:

  • A new carbon dioxide recovery plant was scheduled to break ground on July 1 at the plant of Cooperative Farm Chemicals Association. The liquid CO2 plant was to be built by Airco Inc. of New York. CO2 was then a waste product for Co-Op and the process taking place at Airco would recover the product for use in other industries.
  • The total number of crimes reported thus far in 1971 in Lawrence had decreased 4.1 per cent from the same period the previous year, according to a recent police report. Crimes of violence — rape, robberies and assaults — had increased by 10 compared to this time in 1970. Burglaries had increased slightly. Thefts were slightly down overall, but the number of stolen motor vehicles was double the number from 1969 and up 26.7 per cent from 1970.
