From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 2, 1971:

• Only 14 Kansas University faculty members were to get pay increases in the upcoming “austerity year.” Seven of those getting pay hikes were receiving them from grants they had obtained, while four of them were getting them because of position changes. The remaining faculty members, including almost the entire list of administrators “from Chancellor Laurence Chalmers on down,” were to receive no increases.
• A photo showed an owl perched on the roof of the Will Hess residence, 1531 Davis Road. The owl, who had shown up in the morning, remained there for some time in spite of the close proximity of observers, including children and other birds.
• Audie Murphy, the most decorated U.S. soldier in World War II, was presumed dead after a plane crash near Roanoke, Virginia. At the time of his death, Murphy was married to his second wife, Pam Archer Murphy, a former Lawrence resident who had attended KU in 1942 and 1943.
