40 years ago: County Fair exhibits to be high in quantity, quality

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 31, 1971:

  • Kansas University was “settling down for a mid-summer nap” as the summer-school term wound up with today’s final exams. Orientation for the fall semester was not scheduled to begin until Aug. 23, and several members of the administration were on vacation until mid-August.
  • Max Bahnmaier, a member of the executive board for the Douglas County Fair, said that the exhibits for the 1971 fair were expected to be plentiful and of excellent quality. Good weather in recent weeks formed the basis of his opinion. “The corn is further along than it generally is at this time of year, and the garden crops are all ready by now. We’ve had good moisture,” Bahnmaier pointed out.
