Topeka ? The Kansas Arts Commission plans to gather next week for its first meeting since Gov. Sam Brownback’s appointees became a majority of its 12 members.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at the Statehouse.

The commission had opposed Brownback’s push to reduce the state’s funding of arts programs and rely more heavily on private contributions.

Legislators rejected the governor’s plan, but Brownback vetoed the entire $689,000 set aside by lawmakers in the state budget for the commission. He also vetoed a line authorizing the commission to retain its small staff. Kansas became the first state in the nation to eliminate its arts funding.

Brownback later replaced the commission’s chairman with his own appointee. He filled six other vacancies on commission last week.
