Soccer U12 Spartans earn sliver: The Lawrence Spartans won the silver medal in U12 soccer at the Sunflower State Games, July 23-24 in Topeka. The players: Caden Anderson, Siam Boyd, Ryan Braun, Cole Cooper, Bret Folks, Josh Moore, Chas Sedlock, Juan Solis, Drew Vereen, Jack Vereen, Ayrton WallGregg and Jake Whitebread.

Swim academy: Registration is open for the Aquahawk Swim Academy swim-lesson program. The Aquahawk Swim Academy is designed to introduce new and beginner swimmers to the water, teach basic water safety and swimming skills to swim for fun or competitively. LHS fall sports: The deadline for turning in required forms for participation in fall 2011 sports at Lawrence High is 3:30 p.m. Aug. 11 to the LHS athletic office. The first day of fall sports is Aug. 15. Forms may be picked up at Lawrence High or downloaded at www.lhs.usd497.org.

Horseshoe league: League night is every Thursday evening at 7 at Broken Arrow. Anyone interested can call Wynne at 843-8450.

Free State softball camp: The Free State softball and 5 Tool Softball School will host camp for grades 4-8 on Sundays beginning Aug. 21 at Free State High. Positions camps as well as a pitcher-catcher camps are available. For information contact FSHS coach Lee Ice at ice@sunflower.com

Volleyball camp for kids: A girls volleyball camp for girls going into fourth and fifth grade will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. Aug. 1-4 in the Corpus Christi gym. Next Level youth 7-on-7 tournament: Next Level will host its first 7-on-7 youth tournament from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 6. Participants must be going into grades 4-8, and team as well as individual registrations will be accepted. Deadline is Aug. 1. Hawk Hundred trail run: The Lawrence Trail Hawks are hosting Lawrence’s first-100-mile foot race on the North Shore Trails at Clinton Lake on Sept. 10-11.

The Hawk Hundred features four, 23-mile loops on Clinton Lake’s rocky, root-bound North Shore trail system, with an eight-mile out-and-back at the end. Runners will have 32 hours to complete the course, starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10.

The race will be run old school with extremely limited support for runners. Water will be provided on the course, along with notebooks where runners sign in to keep track of how many laps they’ve completed.

Because of the limited support and because of the many unknowns this first race presents, entrance is only open to runners who have completed a 100-mile or longer race in the allotted time since 2009.

Crush tryouts: Kansas Crush will be hold tryouts for the upcoming 11U 2012 baseball season. Winter workouts are required, and players must be willing to travel. We will play 8-10 tournaments per year throughout the Midwest. We are looking for dedicated players and parents who are willing to put in the time and effort to continue our success. Firestix tryouts: The Lawrence Firestix are moving from 14UB to 16UB and will be hosting a tryout from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on July 30 at Broken Arrow Park (30th and Louisiana Streets) in Lawrence. The team will be looking at all positions with an emphasis on pitching. The Firestix will compete in two tournaments this fall and pick back up once high school ball is over in the spring.

FSHS football fundraiser: The Free State High School Booster Club is organizing a fundraising auction for the football program from 6-9 p.m. on July 29 at The Oread Hotel. There will be door prizes, a silent auction and a live auction. There will be a cash bar, so please leave the little ones with a sitter. Kaw Valley soccer tournament: The 2011 Kaw Valley Cup soccer tournament will be Sept. 16-18 in Lawrence. The tournament is open to Divisions 2-5, Gold and Silver, U9 to U14, Boys and Girls. Registration fees are: $445 for U9 and U10 (six vs. six); $475 for U11 and U12 (eight vs. eight); $500 U13 and U14 (11 vs. 11). Parking is now included in registration fees. Bonnie Henrickson golf tournament: Kansas women’s basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson will host her seventh annual golf tournament on Sept. 17 at the Alvamar Country Club and Golf Course in Lawrence. The Jayhawk women’s basketball team and staff will be in attendance. The event will include a four-person scramble, awards reception and a live and silent auction following a day of golf.

The event gets started with registration at 11:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Dinner and the silent auction will take place at 6 p.m. or immediately following the conclusion of the golf tournament.

Prizes will be awarded to four-woman teams, four-man teams and four-person mixed teams for best score, as well as individual prizes for man and woman longest drive, closest to the pin and hole-in-one. A special bonus offer included with online registration is a one-year subscription to Golf Digest (a $10 value).

Cost of entry is $100 for individuals, $200 for a pair and $400 for a foursome. Sponsorships are also available. All proceeds from the tournament will go to Kansas Women’s Basketball and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Breast Center. Register now online at www.bonniegolf.com.

Phenix-Fyler team takes fourth: The Lawrence Phenix-Fyler 18U softball team finished fourth out of 13 teams at the USSSA State Tournament on July 9-10 at the Basehor Field of Dreams.

The team lost to the Clay Center B’s, 4-0; defeated the Ruffnecks, 5-0; defeated the KC Diamond Cutters, 5-2; defeated the KC Vandals, 10-2; defeated Clay Center, 7-1; lost to Explosion USA, 6-2.

Weekend stats: Dana Kramer 8-for-16, 7 runs; Rachel Potvin 7-for-15, 6 runs; Cori Munoz 6-for-13; Mackenzie O’Brien 6-for-14, 5 runs; Kramer, Rachel Potvin, O’Brien, Kristen Bell and Jamie Jarrett cited for defense.

Sidekicks softball tryouts: Sidekicks softball will hold tryouts for 2011-2012 8U, 10U, 12U and 14U teams. Tryouts will be July 29. Pitcher/catcher registration is 5-5:30 p.m., pitcher/catcher tryouts are 5:30-6:30 p.m. All players register at 6-6:30 p.m., tryouts 6:30-8 p.m. Tryouts will be held at Lawrence Youth Sports Complex (YSI), next to the Clinton Lake Softball Complex, fields 5,6 and 7. Kansas soccer clinic: The Kansas University soccer team will host a free clinic for boys and girls in grades kindergarten through 12th following the Jayhawks’ exhibition match on Aug. 14 versus Butler.

Coach Mark Francis as well as several Jayhawks will participate in the clinic, working on the fundamentals of the game. The clinic will begin at approximately 3:15 p.m. and last about 45 minutes.
