40 years ago: Lawrence police chief to attend FBI program

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 27, 1971:

  • Lawrence Police Chief Richard R. Stanwix had been selected to attend the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy beginning Aug. 16. Stanwix, who had joined the department in April 1953, was the first man from the Lawrence Police Department to attend the academy. He had been nominated by City Manager Buford Watson and had been informed of his selection in a letter from FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. All expenses for the academy’s 12-week program were to be paid by the FBI.
  • Unemployment for Douglas County for June 1971 had clocked in at 6.7 percent, a 72 percent increase for the same period a year earlier.
  • Residents with last names beginning with A through L had only until July 31 to purchase their 1971 Kansas license plates. A $1 fine was to be added to their application after that date.
