Explosion on boat injures one, cause under investigation

The cause of an explosion that engulfed a boat on Perry Lake and injured one person Saturday afternoon is still under investigation.

According to a media release from the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, the incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. A 21-foot boat, carrying five people, experienced some mechanical problems while pulling away from the dock. An explosion occurred, and attempts by the vehicle’s owner and someone on shore to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful. Rock Creek Fire District and Rural Fire District personnel extinguished the fire and treated a 25-year-old Topeka man for injuries. The man was later transported by ambulance to a Topeka area hospital.

Several area agencies, including Jefferson County Emergency Management and the United States Army Corps of Engineers, responded to the incident.
