From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 17, 1971:

• A fire of unknown origin caused about $500 in damages, mostly to furniture, on the fifth-floor lounge of Oliver Hall on the Kansas University campus. People driving down Naismith Drive had noticed flames in fifth-floor windows and had called in the fire at about 3:25 a.m. The dormitory had been evacuated during the blaze, and the former residents of the fifth floor were now facing relocation by university officials.
• The Douglas County Commission announced the county’s intention to pay $2 a day for each person in the custody of the county who was being held at the city jail. The city and the county had formerly exchanged prisoners without any fee, but an increase in use of city jail facilities led to the change. “This is just one more example of our deplorable jail facilities,” said county commission chairman Arthur Heck. In the past, county jail overcrowding had resulted in prisoners being sent as far away as Olathe.
