From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 17, 1911:

• “As Charles Hughes was riding down Mississippi street last night returning from the ball game at McCook field, the front wheel of his bicycle gave way and he was thrown to the pavement…. The injury is quite a painful one and will interfere greatly with his ball playing for a while.”
• “Sheriff Banning this morning took ‘Dutch’ Bryant to Hutchinson where he will serve a term in the state reformatory. Bryant was convicted of breaking into cars at the Santa Fe depot some time ago but he made his escape from the offices here, but was found in Kansas City a couple of weeks ago.”
• “Fred Taylor, son of John Taylor, was hurt this afternoon by his horse falling upon him. He was turning the corner of Henry and Massachusetts street when the horse fell. The boy was hurt in the ankle, but the physician says it isn’t serious. However it is painful.”
