25 years ago: World population reaches five billion

From the Lawrence Journal World for July 8, 1986:

The world’s population reached a milestone this week when the five billionth person was born somewhere on earth. “Never before have so many people shared space on this planet,” said the president of the private organization The Population Institute. A representative from another population research group said that it would be “difficult to feed, clothe, shelter and employ many more people at more than a subsistence level of life.” Other demographers at institutions such as the Population Reference Bureau said that the Population Institute’s estimate might be correct, but that the United Nations’ projection had the population not reaching the 5 billion mark until March 1987.
