Scrap metal from Topeka air base for sale

? Scrap metal from a former Air Force storage facility at the Topeka airport has gone up for sale.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that a recent Internet auction of old equipment from the site generated about $50,000 that could go toward cleaning up the site. The facility had become a dumping ground for vehicles, old equipment, tires and other trash.

Eric Johnson, president of the Metropolitan Topeka Airport Authority, said the cleanup has been under way for more than two years. He estimates it will be at least another year before it’s completed.

Johnson said more than 250,000 pounds of scrap metal were hauled from the site. Much of the scrap metal came from the former munitions area, but some was also cleaned from an old firefighter training site.
