40 years ago: 3-year-old child found wandering on KU campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 25, 1971:

  • Gov. Robert Docking was considering the use of executive order to speed up the hiring of 10 additional security officers for Kansas University. If the recommendation for new hires went through the legislature, the officers would not have been on the job until perhaps summer.
  • A three-year-old child had been found wandering near Stouffer Place at KU, clad only in pajamas and slippers. Several individuals helped KU police take care of the boy before his parents were paged at Allen Fieldhouse and returned home. The parents reported that they had left the boy asleep in bed, and that he had never left his bed before, much less left the house.
  • Unusually warm January weather was making Lawrence a pleasant place for outdoor activities. The mercury had risen to 57 degrees on the previous day, following several days of temperatures in the 40s. An abrupt end to the winter respite was in store, however, as an arctic air mass was expected to reach Kansas and plunge temperatures into the teens.
