From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 18, 1986:

• The planned demolition of a house at 915 Ohio had local preservationists upset. Members of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance were not only opposed to the destruction of the Italianate-style house, but were “outraged” at the use of federal Community Development funds to raze the building.
• Lawrence city staff members, having reviewed a proposed regulation on handguns, were recommending a few changes in order to make enforcement easier. For example, patient confidentiality would prohibit the proposal to check on an applicant’s history of mental illness.
• An early morning fire had gutted an Old West Lawrence home located at 709 Alabama. One of the home’s residents was being treated for smoke inhalation.
• The Lawrence area was enjoying springlike weather, with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. Photos showed two Kansas University students enjoying the balmy skies from a vantage point atop the locomotive in Central (now Buford Watson) Park, as well as a 9-year-old Stacy Copp and some of her friends on Manchester Street who had brought 14 of their Cabbage Patch dolls outside for some fresh air.
