40 years ago: Lawrence ice skaters enjoy good conditions in town, on campus

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 13, 1971:

  • Potter Lake at Kansas University continued to remain safe for skating with a five-inch thickness of solid ice. Colder weather was in the forecast, so good skating was predicted for the immediate future. Meanwhile, the city had received permission to use Peterson’s Pond as a public ice-skating area. The pond, which was located northwest of the Hallmark plant and south of the Kansas Turnpike, had a good thick layer of ice, and the city planned to place benches and firewood at the area. City park workers were also resurfacing the ice on the pond near the locomotive in Central Park for skaters.
  • Six months after the new Perry-Lecompton High School building had been scheduled for completion, work was still underway including painting, carpeting, door fitting, and adjustment of lockers. School superintendent Mason Brunton said that the work was not disrupting classes, however.
