25 years ago: Statewide survey reveals support for lottery

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 11, 1986:

  • Kansas University’s Institute for Public Policy and Business Research had recently taken a telephone poll of 626 Kansans, age 18 and older, on the subject of a state-run lottery. With a 74 percent response rate, the surveyors had found statewide support for a lottery, but with a gender split. Seventy percent of the men said yes, but only 58 percent of the women supported the proposal. When questioned about other issues, 57 percent of respondents said they would like to see pari-mutuel betting on horses in Kansas, 74 percent supported a limit on malpractice awards, 59 percent were in favor of mandatory seat-belt laws, and 57 percent said they wanted tougher drunk-driving laws.
  • Local firm Packer Plastics Inc. had donated $10,000 toward the Holcom Recreation Center fund drive. The gift would provide for construction of a conference room in the 17,465-square-foot complex.
