100 years ago: ‘Old age’ listed as leading cause of death in Douglas County

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 10, 1911:

  • “That if people don’t want to die they must not grow old, is the lesson which the compilation of all Douglas county deaths for 1910 teaches. As the cause of the 324 deaths in Douglas county last year, old age leads with a record of 36, or nearly one-tenth. Next to old age, heart disease is the greatest mortality producer in Douglas, being accredited with 34 deaths. Cancer caused 29, while accidents are held responsible for 24, an unprecedented number for an agricultural community having no factories or other dangerous places of employment.”
  • “A bulletin was issued to street car motormen this morning instructing them to make four safety stops on street intersections where there is frequently a congestion of traffic. The action of the railway company follows the accident at Mass. and Quincy streets Friday in which a buggy was crushed between two passing cars.”
  • “In the State Butter Contest held yesterday at Manhattan, Kans., Pride of Lawrence butter manufactured by the Lawrence Creamery was awarded second place, and the local creamery will receive a liberal cash premium. It is this butter which officially ranks next to the best in the entire state that is now being delivered to the homes in Lawrence and sold at an extremely low price.”
