Historic fort damaged after water pipes burst in Hays

? Historic Fort Hays is closed while workers clean up damage left when water pipes burst over the New Year’s holiday.

Bob Wilhelm, director of the site in Hays, says he discovered the damage on Monday. He says bitterly cold weather over the holiday weekend apparently caused pipes in restrooms to burst.

The Hays Daily News reports that a carpet cleaning company removed 350 gallons of standing water on Monday, with an estimated 100 more gallons in the building’s foundation.

Wilhelm says the main exhibits and murals in the fort were not damaged.

Wilhelm estimated the site would be closed the rest of this week, and he did not have a damage estimate.
