From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 20, 1986:

• Students at Kansas University were expressing their unhappiness with the food available at the cafeterias. Many residents of Hashinger Hall in particular were boycotting the cafeteria in protest. Ken Stoner, director of KU housing, said that approximately 280 students usually ate dinner at Hashinger Hall, but that on a recent boycott night, only 40 students had shown up.
• After only 45 minutes of debate, the Kansas House had given final approval to a resolution allowing voters to vote on whether the state should legalize pari-mutuel betting on horse and dog racing. The bill was now headed to the Senate for consideration.
• About 50 debate teams were gathering at Kansas University for the 29th annual Heart of America Debate Tournament. Schools sending teams to Lawrence included Dartmouth, Emory, Georgetown, Harvard, Northwestern, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Southern California. The debate topic concerned “the application of more rigorous academic standards for U.S. elementary and secondary schools in language arts, mathematics or natural sciences.”
