Kansas budget negotiations for 2011 stall

? House and Senate negotiators are making little progress in efforts to resolve issues with the 2011 Kansas budget.

Legislators met briefly Thursday to discuss their positions on rival versions of bills to trim current state spending.

The House version would cut government programs, including aid to public schools, to save some $35 million.

Senators also want to cut aid to public schools, but include about $26 million for special education to offset a potential loss in federal aid. Its bill saves about $3.6 million in the current budget.

Negotiators from both chambers wouldn’t budge on their positions. No further meetings were scheduled.

Republican Gov. Sam Brownback is asking legislators to cut current state spending to create a $35 million ending balance in the fiscal year ending June 30.
