Projected state budget deficit shrinks for 2012 as revenues increase

? New revenue figures show the size of the projected 2012 Kansas budget shortfall has dropped from $550 million to $492 million.

Alan Conroy, director of the Kansas Legislative Research Department, says the new data is based on revenue collections for January.

Conroy says Monday that after accounting for revenue transfers and other obligations, the state has collected $6,000 more than estimated through January. The $492 million is the same as what was expected in December.

Legislators are considering a bill that would cut state spending in the current year to create a cushion sought by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback. Any savings will be applied to the 2012 budget year, which begins July 1.
