40 years ago: “Gifted program” inaugurated in Lawrence schools

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 7, 1971:

  • It was the first year for the gifted program in Lawrence schools. Thirty-five children, from kindergarten through third grade, from five schools – Woodlawn, Pinckney, East Heights, Cordley and New York – had been identified for the program through teacher referrals. The program, funding for which was provided through the federal Title 2 program of the Elementary and Secondary School Act, was renewable on a year-to-year basis.
  • Kansas University’s Leadership Development Training Center had received a grant from the U.S. Public Health Service to support training programs for staff members at Head Start centers in Kansas and three other states. The program aimed to transform the centers into model agencies for 62 other Head Start centers in the region.
  • The final figures for 1970 were in from the Kansas Turnpike officials, who said that it had been a banner year. Among other accomplishments, traffic was up 3 per cent, with commercial use of the turnpike especially high.
