40 years ago: Cigarette manufacturers begin listing tar, nicotine amounts in ads

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 6, 1971:

  • Beginning today, all but one of the U.S. cigarette companies were planning to list tar and nicotine content in their advertisements. This was in accordance with an industry agreement which proposed, but did not require, the disclosures. The only cigarette maker which had refused to sign the agreement was American Brands, which marketed the Pall Mall, Tareyton and Lucky Strike brands. Most manufacturers said that they did not expect the figures to affect sales.
  • An official ribbon-cutting by Gov. Robert Docking was expected to be part of the ceremonies marking the grand opening of the new Fleetwood, Inc., trailer factory. The $600,000 plant, located near 29th and Haskell Ave., was expected to be in production by March 1 and was to employ about 150 workers.
