Lubbock, Texas ? Texas Tech coach Billy Gillispie said freshman forward Jordan Tolbert is going to be a special player one day.

Scoring 27 points in a 74-58 win against Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday — his fourth consecutive game with at least 20 points — was a good way for the freshman to showcase his growing abilities.

Gillispie insists there is still plenty of growth to be had.

“He’s gonna be something else, but he’s not perfect; he only got six rebounds, and that’s not enough, especially with how our team rebounded tonight,” Gillispie said.

Tolbert’s point total matched the best of his young career, in a 75-69 loss at TCU on Dec. 6. He was 10-for-12 from the field and 7-for-9 at the free-throw line.

Despite the 16-point victory, Gillispie said the Red Raiders (6-5) could have put the hurt on the visiting Roadrunners early on if it attacked the glass better.

Tolbert, who led all players with six rebounds, was the only Red Raider with an offensive board. Bakersfield (6-7) outrebounded Texas Tech 23-20.

“This may be the second time I looked at a stat sheet and we have only one guy on the team secure an offense rebound,” the first-year Texas Tech coach said. “We only had 20 rebounds on the game, and that’s not gonna cut it.”

Texas Tech (6-5) has one final tuneup — against Southeastern Oklahoma on Friday night — before opening Big 12 action Jan. 4 at Oklahoma State. Gillispie wasn’t happy with most of his team’s play on Tuesday.

Texas Tech was leading 55-50 when Cal State Bakersfield’s Donald Johnson was called for a technical foul after he taunted a Texas Tech player when Johnson threw down a two-handed dunk.

“I thought it was the turning point of the game,” said Cal State Bakersfield coach Rod Barnes.

The Red Raiders converted the resulting free throws, and bench player Terran Petteway hit a game-sealing three-pointer to put the Red Raiders up 10 with less than eight minutes to play.
