40 years ago: Douglas County drivers coping with icy roads

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 27, 1971:

  • Area drivers this morning were often surprised to find their vehicles suddenly traveling sideways. A rash of minor accidents were reported across the city as freezing drizzle had covered streets and highways with a thin coating of ice. Fourteen accidents without injury had been reported within the city limits between 7 a.m. and noon today, with three minor and one major accident reported on county roads.
  • State Sen. Arden Booth had been released Sunday [Dec. 26] after spending Christmas in Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he had been admitted after a two-car collision on Christmas Eve. The other driver, whose car had collided with Booth’s at the intersection of West 23rd and Naismith Drive, was also released from the hospital today.
