Tonganoxie 70, Anderson County 67

Garnett — For more than a half, Tonganoxie High’s boys found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided basketball score at Anderson County on Friday.

However, the Chieftains came to life in a big way late and rallied from an 11-point, third-quarter deficit to beat the Bulldogs, 70-67.

Senior Dane Erickson led all scorers with 22 points.

“It would have been real easy for us to feel sorry for ourselves and just quit playing,” THS coach Shawn Phillips said. “But what I’m most proud of about these guys is they kept fighting. It was an uphill battle the entire game.”

The Chieftains (2-1) entered the second half down just eight, but Anderson County extended its lead to 43-32 midway through the third quarter. From there, Phillips’ squad began to chip away.

Tongie trimmed the Bulldogs’ advantage to 54-49 at the end of the period, setting up some late-game fireworks.

Four quick points by junior John Lean put Tonganoxie with four early in the fourth, and the teams traded baskets for several minutes.

The Chieftains took their first lead, 63-61, when Lean completed a three-point play with 1:46 remaining.

Lean, Erickson and junior Josh Ghale made shots down the stretch to keep Tonganoxie in front.

Ghale and Lean scored 17 and 13 points, respectively.

Boys

McLouth 51, Troy 35

McLouth — Gavin Sweargin scored a game-high 25 points in McLouth’s romp.

Horton 67, Oskaloosa 37

Horton — Horton had four players score in double figures in a lopsided victory over Oskie.

Girls

Tonganoxie 54, Anderson County 12

Garnett –Three players reached double figures for the Chieftains (2-1). Senior Tavia Brown led the way with 13 points, while sophomore Emma Stilgenbauer and senior Amanda Holroyd each added 10.

Anderson County came out cold on offense, and Tonganoxie took advantage. The Bulldogs missed their first 16 shot attempts, allowing the Chieftains to sprint to a 26-0 lead.

“Early on, we fouled a lot,” THS coach Randy Kraft said. “We were too aggressive, but they were just missing shots.”

Eudora 35, Wellsville 25

Wellsville — Eudora limited Wellsville to just five points after halftime.

Erica McTaggart led WHS with nine points.

Sabetha 49, Santa Fe Trail 33

Sabetha — Santa Fe Trail scored more points in the fourth quarter (17) than in the first three quarters combined (16) of a lopsided loss.

Nemaha Valley 47, Perry-Lecompton 29

Seneca — Nine players scored for Perry-Lecompton, including Madison Hess with a team-leading eight points, but the Kaws fell to Nemaha Valley. The Kaws (0-5) will entertain Royal Valley on Tuesday.

Oskaloosa 53, Horton 44

Horton — Haley Pfau had 25 points as Oskaloosa pulled.
