40 years ago: Lawrence Bus Co. to discontinue service

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 8, 1971:

The Lawrence Bus Company officially announced today that all city bus service would be eliminated with the exception of Kansas University shuttles and charters. The “KU – Downtown” route was to be discontinued as of Dec. 11, and the one remaining line, the “Haskell – Fourth and Maine,” would close down on Dec. 24. In a letter to the Lawrence City Commission, bus company owner Duane Ogle wrote that the bus company had been “operating in the red for the past several years. Like many public transportation companies we can no longer support the operation from the farebox.” Commissioners agreed that it was not financially feasible for the city to continue to subsidize the service and that not enough people rode the bus to justify continuation.
