Veritas girls win opener; boys fall to Flint Hills

Kristen Finger totaled 15 points and 14 rebounds, and the Veritas Christian girls basketball team opened its season with a 30-11 victory against Flint Hills Christian on Thursday in the Shea Invitational.

Ellen Phillips added five points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who will play Salina Smoky Valley in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. today.

“For our first game, with several new girls worked into the mix, it took us a while to get going,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “It was nice to play a game and do some of the things we’ve been working on in practice. I was pretty proud of the them for their first game tonight.”

Flint Hills Christian 42, Veritas boys 37

Veritas Christian School’s boys basketball team fell to Flint Hills, 42-37, on Thursday in the first round of the Shea Tournament.

Andrew Currier scored 11 points and Eric Shin 10 for Veritas (0-1).

“There were first-game jitters, a lot of mistakes and missed assignments. Hopefully we’ll settle down tomorrow and play better,” coach Gary Hammer said. “We were down 13 at half and got within three points. I was proud of the way we battled and made a game of it in the fourth quarter.”

Veritas will play Salina Smoky Valley at 3:15 p.m., today.
