40 years ago: Haskell library construction fund nears halfway point

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 20, 1971:

  • A $3,000 donation from the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, had recently increased the Haskell Indian Junior College library fund to $40,760. The school was expected to be awarded an additional $20,000 grant from the William H. Donner Foundation, which would raise the fund nearly to the halfway point toward the $139,000 goal.
  • Representatives from the Kansas-National Education Association were urging local school boards to honor new teacher contracts in spite of the federal government’s contention that the contracts fell under President Nixon’s wage-price freeze. The K-NEA’s position was that the burden of proof of the status of the contracts was on the Office of Economic Preparedness, which was the agency that Nixon had designated to enforce the 90-day freeze.
