Kansas women cruise in Italian exhibition

? A balanced offense that saw six players finish with double-digit points helped Kansas University’s women’s basketball team claim an overwhelming 110-25 victory versus Selezione Lombardia Wednesday night in the small town of Varese, Italy, located between Como and Milan.

KU improved to 3-0 during its tour of Italy and will play one more contest tonight before returning to the U.S. Friday, Aug. 19.

A trio of players led the Jayhawks with 14 points each, as senior Carolyn Davis and freshmen Donielle Breaux and Bunny Williams combined for nearly half of KU’s total output. Sophomore Keena Mays and freshman Chelsea Gardner added 12 points apiece, while senior Aishah Sutherland rounded out the double-digit scoring crowd with 10 tallies.

Kansas’ speed combined with its height under the basket helped set the tone early. A series of fast breaks led the Jayhawks to a 37-10 advantage after the first quarter. KU continued to play solid defense in the second quarter and out-scored Lombardia, 38-9, to take a commanding 75-19 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.

Kansas hit 50 of its 71 shots from the field, mostly in the paint, for a 70.4 percent shooting percentage. Layups and fast-break points were due in part to the 28 steals made by the Jayhawks, including a team-high seven from Breaux. KU also dominated on the boards and were led by Gardner’s seven caroms. Williams and fellow freshman Asia Boyd also shined pulling down five rebounds each.
