August, I’ve come to learn, is what you make it. It can offer the dregs of the TV schedule or become a showcase for promising starts. Weekends in August on television are a little like a trip to the Salvation Army thrift store. Is it a place for sad, smelly castoffs or an opportunity to discover shabby chic? That’s entirely up to you!

Speaking of sad castoffs, Nicollette Sheridan stars in the Hallmark romance “Honeymoon for One” (8 p.m., Hallmark). The former “Desperate Housewives” star plays Eve Parker, a haughty, ambitious and overscheduled career woman. Is any other kind featured in these Hallmark movies?

“Honeymoon” hews to the network’s formula with near-metronomic precision. Eve’s first seen planning her long- delayed wedding. Scant moments later, she discovers what the audience already knows (or should know), that her fiance is a loser, a user and a cad. Undaunted, she proceeds to go to the posh Irish hotel booked for their honeymoon, where, about 20 minutes into the proceedings, she will encounter the gruff but sexy Irish single dad who will teach her what life’s really about amid the blarney and the four-leaf clovers.

Sheridan, who was cast, if not typecast, as a schemer on “Housewives,” never exactly warms to the scorned woman part. It will take more than a bowl of Lucky Charms to get audiences to root for her.

• Professional wrestling has been a big part of television since the days of the DuMont Network back in the 1940s. It still must get solid cable ratings to justify its existence.

But you can’t help thinking wrestling has also become a kind of itinerant drifter, showing up in odd places where it’s not always welcome. You need read only a few fan sites to see how much sci-fi buffs hate the Syfy Network for airing random wrestling bouts. And can you blame them?

Tonight, the circus comes to town on NBC, which certainly is in no position to condescend to wrestling. And everything comes together as “Wrestlemania: The World Premiere” (8 p.m.) features an appearance by Snooki from “Jersey Shore.”

• Scientists wonder if geological disturbances conform to a “Doomsday Prophecy” (8 p.m., Syfy) in this 2011 shocker.

• “The Graham Norton Show” (9 p.m., BBC America) offers highlights from the ninth season.

Cult choice

Wouldn’t you love to see a “where are they now” feature on the feral child from the 1981 thriller “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” (7 p.m., AMC)?
