From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 13, 1971:

Officers from the sheriff’s departments of Douglas, Franklin, Osage and Shawnee counties, as well as police department personnel from Lawrence, Ottawa, and other towns, were combing the area for a trio of men who had “walked away” from the Kansas Reception and Diagnostic Center at Topeka. One of the men was a 28-year-old who had given his address as 929 Connecticut Street at the time of his December arrest in connection with a break-in at the Flamingo Club. Having pleaded guilty to grand theft in March, and being sentenced to one to five years in prison from the Douglas County District Court, he had been taken to the diagnostic center, from which he had escaped with two others. The men were on foot and had reportedly walked from Topeka to the search area, which began 10 miles southwest of Lawrence and continued about three miles north and south and 10 miles east and west. Two of the three were later apprehended at a home in Leavenworth County, and the third picked up by officers in the Globe area. At that time the men were also suspected of having stolen a truck, owned by the Kaw Dehydrating Co., from a farm northwest of Lone Star.
