40 years ago: Area club members prepare fairgrounds

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 2, 1971:

  • Armed with hoses and buckets, several hundred 4-H club members were out at the fairgrounds cleaning up buildings in preparation for the Douglas County 4-H and FFA Free Fair which was scheduled to begin this week.
  • A drowning was reported from Perry Lake for the third Sunday in a row. An 18-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man had been swimming across a cove with a friend when he had suddenly gone under water and had not come up. Hundreds of swimmers had been in the swimming area at the time of the drowning.
