The Douglas County Child Development Association is seeking volunteers to help with an upcoming event. DCCDA will be celebrating the first-year successes of its program “Families, Farmers and Educators United for Healthy Child Development” at its Fall Festival. The festival will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at Pendleton’s Country Market, 1446 E. 1850 Road. Volunteers will need to show up half an hour early to be assigned to various stations.

Help will be needed with farm games (gunny sack races, egg toss, etc.), kids’ crafts, setup and tear-down of musical equipment, and serving the local meal. Volunteers will also receive a free meal. Immediate needs

• Just Food is looking for community members who want to become a part of its volunteer family. Just Food is hosting regular volunteer training sessions in the conference room of its warehouse, located at 1200 E. 11th St. Show up at any of the following times for training: first Mondays of the month at 10 a.m., second Tuesdays at 4 p.m., third Wednesdays at 2 p.m., and fourth Thursdays at 8 a.m. If none of these times work for you but you’d still like to volunteer, or for more information, contact Carol Leffler at 865-7030 or carolleffler@yahoo.com.

• Vermont Towers is seeking a volunteer to read regularly with a new resident who is a retired Haskell professor. She enjoys many types of books and articles, and would enjoy discussing the materials with the reader. Days and times are flexible based on availability of the volunteer. • Community Living Opportunities of Kansas is seeking volunteers to assist with yard upkeep at its family-teaching homes in the Lawrence area — primarily pulling weeds and trimming shrubs. CLO serves three or four adults with a variety of developmental disabilities in family-teaching settings, which typically are duplexes where a couple and their kids live on one side of the duplex and the persons served live on the other side. Many times the family teachers and individuals they serve are unable to complete the yard work, and budget cuts have limited paid help to just mowing. Individuals or groups of volunteers are welcome and CLO will work with your schedule and time availability.
