Club news for April 30, 2011

University Bridge Club announces results of its April 23 meeting with hosts JoAnne Kready and Richard Quinn.

Blue winners: Steven Bogler, first; Marc Kuepker, second; Bonnie Haney, third; George Gibbs, fourth; and Doug Baur, fifth.

Pink winners: Dottie Miller, first; Karen Zimmerer, second; Willi Stark, third; Carol Smith, fourth; and Sue Baur, fifth.

The Douglas County Chapter 1696 of the Association of Retired Persons installed new officers for 2011-2012 during the April 22 meeting at the Lawrence County Club. Officers are: Charles Hill, president; Walt Houk, president-elect; Pattie Johnston, vice president; and Russell Bailey, treasurer. Board members are: Mary Kanous, acting secretary; and Bill Pendleton, Ellen Harbaugh, Nancy Boswell, Herschel Glover and Janice Dick. Andrea Bozarth, Kansas AARP community outreach director, installed the officers. The next meeting will be May 27 with guest speaker Mike Fox from the Midland Railroad Association. The Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association of Lawrence won the Tradition of Leadership Award at the Fraternity’s Zeta Province April 9 meeting in Columbia, Mo. The award recognizes an association that exhibits a positive relationship with the alumnae and active chapter it supports. Delegates representing Lawrence were Jannie Thomas Barron and Marie Gonzalez Deel. Coordinator of Chapter Support for Zeta Province Kristi McCune Rowland also attended. President of the alumnae association is Tammy Gaynier Steeples.

Omega Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Kansas University received two honorable mention awards, the Excellence in Scholarship Award and the Risk Management Award. Kelsi Devos is president of Omega Chapter.

The next Zeta Province meeting will be hosted by Omega Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma at KU and the Lawrence Alumnae Association in 2013 in Lawrence.

The Wednesday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 20 was directed by Chris Lane. North-South winners were Dianne Childs and Judy Hildreth, first in A and B; Jerry Sloan and Dave Chipman, second in A; Mary Fenlon and Lester Dalton, third in A and second in B; Vince Nordberg and Steven Vossler, fourth in A; Chris Lane and Mona Bell, third in B; Catherine Blumenfeld and Grant Sutton, fourth in B; and Jack Flickinger and Marilyn Martin, first in C.

East-West winners were Jan O’Connor and Lois Clark, first in A and B; Virginia Seaver and Shirley Reese, second in A; Eldon Herd and Shari Krentzel, third in A and second in B; Sally Taylor and Yvonne Hedges, fourth in A and third in B; Polly Schoning and Mark Osborn, fourth in B; and Jean Khatib and Patricia Lechtenberg, first in C.

The Thursday Morning Mentor Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 21 was directed by Chris Lane. Winners were Doris Sindt and Barbara McCorkle, first; Shirley Reese and Wanna Roszel, second; Mary Cornwell and Jean Khatib, third; and Clarice Broz and Chris Lane, fourth.

The Friday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 22 was directed by Virginia Seaver. North-South winners were Lester Dalton and Mary Fenlon, first in A; James Gunn and Virginia Seaver, second in A; Kent McCullough and Lois Clark, third in A; Vince Nordberg and Ed Howard, fourth in A; Chris Lane and Jan O’Connor, first in B; and Marilyn Martin and Jack Flickinger, second in B.

East-West winners were Steven Vossler and Larry Weatherholt, first in A; Mark Osborn and Bobby Patton, second in A and first in B; Yvonne Hedges and Shirley Reese, third in A and second in B; Sally Taylor and Klee Zaricky, fourth in A and third in B; Mona Bell and Carol Ball, first in C; and Marilyn Lahm and Clarice Broz, second in C.

The Monday Evening Duplicate Bridge Club’s game on April 25 was directed by Virginia Seaver. Winners were Lois Clark and Jerry Sloan, first; Virginia Seaver and John Fittell, second; Albert Ballard and Grant Sutton, third; and James Masilamani and Jean Khatib tied in fourth with Jolene Andersen and Ed Howard.

Sigma Alpha Iota Lawrence Alumnae and Patroness Chapter will host the Kansas University Beta Beta Collegiate Chapter with a rose luncheon at 10 a.m. May 7 at the home of Jackie Shmalberg, 326 Homestead Drive. A musicale will be presented by KU recipients of the Elin J. Stene Scholarship, 2010-11, and a senior farewell for graduates will precede the luncheon followed by an alumnae installation of officers and annual meeting.
