Two Lawrence icons could be among the Kansas Sampler Foundation’s Eight Wonders of Kansas People.

James Naismith, who created the sport of basketball, and Haskell Indian Nations University are the two representatives from Lawrence on the list of 24 finalists.

The people contest is the last in a series designed to educate the public about Kansas and to inspire travel around the state. Previous contests have focused on the overall wonders of Kansas and areas including architecture, art and geography.

Though some Kansans — such as Dwight Eisenhower — weren’t eligible for the people contest because they had been honored in previous wonders contests, the list features other notables — abolitionist John Brown, inventor George Washington Carver and baseball pitcher Walter Johnson.
