25 years ago: Western Hills annexation process begins

A team of American and French researchers was reported to have located the wreck of the luxury liner Titanic at a depth of more than 12,000 feet south of Newfoundland. The wreckage had eluded the efforts of at least three earlier search teams. The ship, which had sunk more than 73 years earlier, had been positively identified by underwater cameras and a submarine sonar system.

Lawrence city commissioners approved a site plan that would add a liquor store to a gasoline station located at 23rd and Alabama. Commissioner Ernest Angino, casting the lone vote against the plan, said that it went against common sense to sell gasoline and liquor at the same location.

Despite opposition from residents, the Lawrence city commission started the annexation process for the Western Hills area. About 40 residents of the 120-acre “island” west of Monterey Way and north of 15th Street attended the meeting. Their objections to the annexation included higher property taxes and possible special assessments for street improvements and water and sewer line installation.
